Trash OR Top Class?

What do you think about this fagus sylvatica? Is this just an ugly shrub or does it have the potential to become once a really interesting bonsai?

The approx. trunk diameter is 30 - 35 cm.

  1. Have a big, fat trunk...
In the next spring remove the soil?

  2. Why not! I think it could be a cool natural old fat tree! It looks a little bit like one of Walter Palls Maples! Will you dig it out now or in spring? But what about the roots? Do you think that they could be a problem?

  4. WOW Jani ... that´s terrific!!! This would be the maximum somebody could do out of this material. Thank you for the great inspiration!

    Bollesz and Philipp,
I´m planning to collect the fagus with "Budding" method. It will take at least one year. But this is the safest way to collect the old & fat fagus successfully.
Indeed, this species is very hard to collect.

    I´ll keep you posted!

    Greetings,
    Igor

  6. I just want to join to the previous. Absolutely maximum quality! I visioned a more trunk bonsai from this material, I think it will be "faster", but the picture, that Jani linked is more best.
What's the meaning of the grafting method? You digging the tree in more steps?
    Greating!

  7. I would have no doubt, I think it's got a great potential, it has been naturally sculptured, now it's in your hands to give it the final touch. Good luck!

  9. Ohh, thats first-class material!

But for me, it would be a little bit to large, but I hope that you'll have luck and you make it to a bonsai!!!

  10. Hello again,

thank´s a lot for your response! I will prepare the tree for at least 2 seasons. But anyway, the tree is the indicator. So it´s going to show me when the right time has come to dig it out.

    I´ll keep you posted!

    Greetings,

  11. nice piece. collect first ask questions later. the tree will let you know what its good for. a tree is never trash to one who can tame or understand the tree its more interesting to be ugly and unperfect then to be pretty and perfect.
